Nebraska Gets the Trophy Back at the 40th Kansas-Nebraska Junior Cup

Matches Conducted Monday-Tuesday at Firethorn Golf Club

LINCOLN (August 5, 2025) - Nebraska won back the Virgil A. Parker Trophy on Tuesday at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, claiming the 40th Kansas-Nebraska Junior Cup Matches. 

Nebraska entered the day with a 7-1 lead, with Kansas giving Nebraska a battle as singles matches were conducted. In the end, Nebraska took back the trophy with a score of 10.5-5.5, flipping the score of last year's matches in favor of Nebraska.

The home team dominated the team matches on Monday. Sweeping the Four-Ball matches, and winning three of four Foursomes matches, to jump out to a commanding 7-1 lead.

The singles matches went back and forth throughout the morning, with Nebraska ultimately securing the victory in a tied match between Carter Honnens (Nebraska) and Josh Fratzel (Kansas).

Kansas claimed the first singles matches of the day, with the standout match between Nash Malone (Nebraska) and Regan Kueker (Kansas) ending on Hole 13, Kueker taking the victory 6 & 5. 

Trevor Gutschewski of Omaha secured a point for Nebraska in his match against Stuart Boulware. The match was a battle, with each player taking the lead back and forth between holes. Gutschewski earned a 2-and-1 win for a point for Nebraska.

Zack Erstad of Lincoln also secured a point for Nebraska in his match against Luke Springer that also ended on No. 17, with an easier victory after remaining in the lead for most of the match. The two tied on the last hole to give Erstad the victory, 2 and 1.

Finishing out the morning for Nebraska, Coltrane Mittag of Ashland closed out his match on No. 18. The match against Jacob Fratzel was a toss-up on who would secure victory, with Mittag having a 4-hole lead in the front nine. Fratzel and Mittag went back and forth for the lead on the back nine, Mittag ending the match on the last hole with a long putt for the win.

Mittag and Gutschewski led the way for Team Nebraska, both winning all three of their matches, to earn all three points available.
