Amateurs Reclaim Nebraska Cup in 50th Edition

Matches Conducted Thursday at Omaha Country Club

OMAHA (June 9, 2022) – The Amateur Team took the 50th Nebraska Cup Matches on Thursday at Omaha Country Club to reclaim the cup back from the Pros.

The event annually pits the state’s best amateur golfers versus the state’s top professionals in both Four-Ball and Singles matches. The Nebraska PGA won the matches last year, but The Amateurs got revenge, winning the 2022 matches, 39.5-32.5. The Pros now lead the series 28-22.

The Pros held a slight edge after the morning Four-Ball session, 19-17. Elkhorn's Ryan Nietfeldt and Omaha's Andy Sajevic led the way for the Amateur team, sweeping all six points in the Nassau match play scoring, over Steve Friesen of Firethorn Golf Club and Andrew Storm of Shadow Ridge Country Club. Johnny Spellerberg of Bennington and Charlie Zielinski of Omaha pick up four more points to win their match.

In the afternoon Singles, the Amateurs fought back, taking the session handedly, 22.5-13.5. Lincoln's David Easley was one of two players to sweep a match for the Amateurs, taking all three points from Storm. Lincoln's Ed Wyatt also captured three points from Mike Antonio of Happy Hollow Club. Nietfeldt, Sajevic and Spellerberg all added two points to their tally for the day, each winning their singles matches.
