Expanded Field Set for 25th Nebraska Senior Amateur

Championship Begins Tuesday at The Players Club in Omaha

OMAHA (June 9, 2023) - Eleven past champions are in the field for the 25th Nebraska Senior Amateur Championship at The Players Club in Omaha, beginning Tuesday.

The field was expanded to a max of 144 players this year, up from 78 last year, with 115 entries received for the championship. Among the expanded field is Gretna's Brian Csipkes, who won last year's championship to capture his first NebGolf title, and followed it up by completing only the second-ever senior NebGolf sweep by winning the Nebraska Senior Match Play in September. Mike Krumland of Columbus was the first to sweep the senior events in 2014.

John Sajevic of Fremont, who is also in the field this week, has won the title a record four times, winning it in 2008 and three times since 2016. Lincoln's Ed Wyatt is also competing, who won the championship after a nine-hole playoff in 2020, and defended it in 2021, shooting 142 (-2) to claim a 1-stroke victory. Wyatt finished runner-up to Csipkes in 2022.

Six other previous champions join the trio in the field. Gary Bowen of Omaha (2001), Tom Olson of Omaha (2003), John Haney of Lincoln (2005), Bill Lawson of Omaha (2009), David Clouse of Friend (2010), Steve Samuelson of Fremont (2012 and 2013), Krumland (2006, 2014) and Carl Johnson of Omaha (2017).

Two Nebraska Senior Match Play Champions are in the field as well, aiming to complete their trophy cases. Omaha's Kirby Smith, who won the match play title in 2020, was runner-up in 2021 by only one stroke at Platteview Golf Club, and is joined by Papillion's Matt Haynes, who won the match play in 2019.

Other past NebGolf champions in the field include 2000 Nebraska Mid-Amateur champion Skip Gist of Omaha and 2005 Nebraska Mid-Amateur Champion Rick Dusek of Omaha.

The championship features 36-holes of stroke play competition over two days, and will be played at The Players Club for the third time. The par-71 layout will measure 6,656 yards for the Championship Division, with age divisional competition also included. Play begins Tuesday with two waves off holes 1 and 10, the first wave teeing off 8-9:30 a.m. and the second wave 1-2:30 p.m.
