Hanna Leads Girls' Championship, Topp and Boor Lead Boys' at Fremont Golf Club

FREMONT (August 2, 2021) - Omaha's Kaitlyn Hanna took the lead in the 21st Nebraska Girls' Amateur Championship and Omaha's Porter Topp and Jake Boor lead in the 54th Nebraska Junior Amateur Championship, after the first round at Fremont Golf Club on Monday.

Hanna is in search of her second title and leads by one stroke after a round of even-par 71. The Omaha Westside senior won the 2019 Nebraska Girls' Amateur Championship, but missed last year's championship. She had four-straight top 10s in this championship prior to that.

Hanna had it rolling on her first nine, after starting on No. 10 at Fremont Golf Club. She made birdies on Nos. 14 and 18 to make the turn in 35 (-1). However, three bogeys on her first four holes of the front nine dropped her back over-par. Hanna bounced back though, with birdies on two of her last four holes to get back to even-par.

Omaha's Julia Karmazin is just a stroke back after a round of 72 (+1). She made one birdie and just one double-bogey on No. 11 during her round. Her older sister, Emily Karmazin, is in a tie for third with Wahoo's Lauren Thiele. Emily and Thiele, the reigning and two-time Nebraska Girls' Match Play Champion, both shot rounds of 73 (+2), and are two strokes back.

In a tie for fifth at 74 (+3) is a talented pair, which includes the 2020 Nebraska Women's Match Play Champion Katie Ruge of Omaha and last year's Nebraska Girls' Amateur runner-up, Nicole Kolbas of Lincoln.

On the boys' side, Topp was the first player in the clubhouse in red numbers with a round of 70 (-1). He started on the back nine and made the turn in 36 (E). He kicked off the front nine with birdies on Nos. 1 and 3 to get under par. Topp, who will be a junior at Omaha Westside, made double-bogey on No. 6, but followed with a birdie on No. 8, after hitting the flagstick with his chip and tapping in.

Boor jumped into the lead and held it through most of the afternoon. He made the turn in 34 (-1), and took the lead with a five-footer for birdie on No. 12 to get to 2-under. The dangerous par-5 13th was next for Boor, and he made double-bogey. A few holes later though, Boor nearly made an ace on the par-3 17th hole, and tapped in from just a few inches for birdie. A par on No. 18 gave Boor a share of the lead after 18 holes with Topp at 70 (-1).

In a tie for third at 71 (E), is Marcus Holling of Grand Island and Connor Steichen of Omaha. Christopher Atkinson of Omaha had the low round of the morning wave, shooting a 72 (+1). The 2021 Nebraska Junior Match Play Champion had a rough start and was 3-over through six holes. He also bounced back though, and posted a back nine 34 (-2) to take the early lead. Atkinson is tied with Omaha's Jackson Benge, who made three birdies and four bogeys in the afternoon to also shoot 72 (+1).

The boys' field will be cut to the low 40 scores and ties after Tuesday's round, with the final round scheduled for Wednesday. The girls' final round will take place Tuesday afternoon, with the leaders set to tee off at 3 p.m. Full results and second round pairings are available at the championship websites below.
