Kansas, Nebraska Tied After Day One of Junior Cup

Kansas, Nebraska Tied After Day One of Junior Cup

Four-Ball and Foursomes Matches Conducted Wednesday at Wild Horse Golf Club

GOTHENBURG (August 11, 2021) – Kansas jumped out to the lead after the first session, but Nebraska came storming back to tie the 36th Kansas-Nebraska Junior Cup after the first day at Wild Horse Golf Club in Gothenburg on Wednesday.

The event annually pits the best juniors from each state in Four-Ball, Foursomes and Singles matches. The first two sessions were conducted on Wednesday, and Kansas took charge early, winning the Four-Ball session 3-1. Nebraska came back to win the afternoon Foursomes session, 3-1, to tie the matches at 4-all after the first day.

Omaha's Jake Boor and Rex Soulliere led the way for Nebraska, earning two points during the day. The Creighton Prep teammates were the only Nebraska team members to earn a point in the morning Four-Ball session, defeating Carson Baker of Overland Park and Noah Holtzman of Wichita, 1 up.

Boor and Soulliere then picked up a less-stressful win in their afternoon match. Soulliere wedged it close on No. 15 and Boor knocked in the birdie putt to close out the match, 4 and 3, over Baker and Holtzman again.

It was Omaha's Connor Steichen and Grand Island's Marcus Holling who were the story of the afternoon though. Holling rolled in a long birdie putt on No. 2 and they never cooled off. The duo rattled off six-straight birdies to build a 5-up lead. They added another birdie on No. 10, and Steichen hit a three-wood to inside 10 feet on the long par-3 13th hole, which was eventually conceded to give them a 7-and-5 win over Luke Scheufler of Andover and Blake Saffel of Wellington. Steichen and Holling were eight-under during the alternate shot match.

In the last match on the course, Brayden Schram of Hastings and Cole Feddersen of Kearney battled to earn another point for Nebraska and tie the matches at the conclusion of the first day. They fought back to tie the match after No. 14, and won Nos. 17 and 18 to win 2 up, over Brent Reintjes and Asher Whitaker of Wichita.

Nebraska needs to earn 4.5 of a possible eight points during Thursday's Singles matches to reclaim the Cup. Kansas can reclaim the Cup with just four points.
