Karmazin, Gutschewski Lead at Nebraska Girls' & Junior Amateur

First Round Conducted Wednesday at Beatrice Country Club

BEATRICE (July 6, 2022) - Omaha's Emily Karmazin and Elkhorn's Trevor Gutschewski hold the lead after the first round of the 22nd Nebraska Girls' Amateur Championship and the 55th Nebraska Junior Amateur Championship, Wednesday at Beatrice Country Club.

Karmazin leads the race for the girls' title following a round of 75 (+3). The soon-to-be Omaha Maverick leads by two strokes in search of her first NGA title. She opened her round on fire, making birdie on three of her first five holes to jump into the lead at 3-under. A bogey on No. 8, dropped her back a stroke and she made the turn in 34 (-2).

Karmazin added another birdie on No. 10 to get back to 3-under, but cooled off down the stretch, with bogeys on six of her final eight holes. However, she still cruised in with the first round lead.

Gutschewski was the only player to break par in the boys' field. He put together a stellar round of 70 (-2) and leads by two strokes. Gutschewski is the son of PGA Tour member Scott Gutschewski, and the younger brother of the 2020 Nebraska Junior Amateur Champion, Luke Gutschewski.

It was a hot start for Gutschewski, who will be just a sophomore this fall. He opened with three birdies in his first six holes, including birdies on both par-3s on the back nine at Beatrice CC. A bogey on No. 18 made it a 35 (-1) on his first nine, but he played flawless golf on the front nine, with one birdie and eight pars, to post his red number.

A large group of players are just two strokes back of Gutschewski at even-par, including the defending champion Connor Steichen of Omaha. He made three birdies and three bogeys for his round of 72 (E). Joining him at level-par are Omaha's Kingston Solomon, Zac McCormack, Kolby Brown and Fremont's Drake Hull.

Another logjam rounds out the top 10, with four players tied for seventh at 73 (+1). That group includes Omaha's Jacob Goertz, Teddy Peterson and Trey Ruge, as well as Doniphan's Ethan Smith.

Back on the girls' side, North Platte's Karsen Morrison is right in the mix, after a round of 77 (+5) has her in solo-second, two strokes back of Karmazin. Scottsbluff's Anna Kelley, Omaha's Katie Ruge and Lincoln's Ellynne Honnens are tied for third at 78 (+6).

Omaha's Julia Karmazin, Emily's younger sister, is sixth after a round of 79 (+7), while Wahoo's Brooke Thiele and Omaha's Izabella Pesicka are tied for seventh at 80 (+8). Two players are tied for ninth at 81 (+9), rounding out the Top 10, including Sarah Lasso of Columbus and Erica Lee of Omaha.

The fields will be cut following Thursday's second round. The low 36 scores and ties will advance on the boys' side, while the low 15 and ties will advance on the girls' side.
